Bankfoot

5½ miles

Five miles north of the Inveralmond roundabout on the northern outskirts of Perth turn left on to the B867 through Bankfoot. Population 1136 (2001). We will pass the Perthshire visitor centre on our right hand side before entering the village itself which stands on the Garry Burn. In the late nineteenth century a large proportion of the inhabitants were weavers.

The church on the hill, the Auchtergaven Parish church, was built in 1812. In 1979 there was a union between the Parishes Moneydie and Auchtergaven and services were held in the Auchtergaven church. On Ash Wednesday, the 25th February 2004 fire destroyed the building, however a new church has now been built on another site and was officially opened in October 2008.

One and a half miles north of Bankfoot on the quiet country road, we travel through the hamlet of Waterloo and with Birnam hill to the left we pass under the railway before eventually rejoining what now is the new road. Turn left and if you wish to travel the next section of the Old A9 turn right almost immediately into Birnam.
